Solutions
The current technology being deployed for Advanced Meter Infrastructure applications is inherently unsecure.
Whether RF or WiFi enabled, the current AMI meters available from Itron, Echelon, GE, Landis+Gyr, and others utilize 128-bit encryption, which is basic encryption, if they employ any encryption at all. There are dozens of software programs available on the internet which can easily break this level of encryption.
Infrax has the power to secure the Smart Grid, capturing and transmitting highly encrypted data over secure tunnels using their unique and proprietary communications transport methodology known as GridMesh™. When paired with their device and data security management tool known as GRiM, Infrax enables the secure management of the "last mile" backhaul necessary for utilities to implement Smart Grid applications including AMI, and Demand Side Management.
The company believes their Secure Intelligent Energy Platform will become the standard for Smart Grid communications. Their vision is one of a “SECURE GRID”, one that fully realizes the potential that their collective innovations will bring to an industry that will see explosive growth over the next 10 years. The “SECURE GRID” is a generation ahead of the two-way communications goal of the ‘SMART GRID’.
Network Infrastructure
The Infrax UMAX product line provides highly survivable redundant wireless links to augment fiber and copper communications, as mandated by the North American Energy Reliability Corporation (NERC).
In 2007, the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granted NERC the legal authority to enforce reliability standards with all users, owners and operators of the bulk power system in the United States, and made compliance with those standards mandatory and enforceable. NERC Standards require certain classifications of utility substations to be equipped with redundant, robust communications capability to improve the reliability of the electric Grid.
Infrax's UMAX wireless communications products are a core component of Substation Automation projects for Utilities and are "Smart Grid Ready." UMAX deployments can be scaled to incorporate Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) capabilities as well. UMAX provides an Ethernet handoff for integration with substation control, communications and monitoring equipment and is available in a broad array of licensed and unlicensed frequencies.
As NERC Standards are driven deeper into the North American power grid, Infrax's products continue to provide solutions which cost effectively improve the reliability and performance of the smart grid.
More Bandwidth and Throughput
Scalability - Supports more customers and growth
Upgradeable – less expensive to maintain and upgrade
Can efficiently run off stand- alone solar power
Security
In today’s environment of increasing threat sophistication and regulatory pressures, managing risk has become a primary concern for Utility IT organizations. Today, a single breach can cost millions, be devastating to industrial, commercial and residential consumers, and create a threat to national security. Infrax’s Sentinel and Grid Intrusion Management (GRiM) products provide a secure solution for complete grid, network and intelligent device management.
Sentinel Information Security
Infrax’s Sentinel Information Security solutions go beyond traditional security information management solutions to deliver complete threat life-cycle management.
Sentinel provides integrated real-time event correlation capabilities and includes modules for security, network and systems management, log management, and convergence. Our technology automates key network functions including threat discovery and isolation, problem remediation and element management, all through a secure TLS Tunnel.
The Sentinel collects application event information across the utility network and application event information - providing broad visibility to potentially threatening behaviors. By delivering real-time event analysis and correlation, it provides early threat detection.
In addition to threat management, the Sentinel delivers real-time performance monitoring and analytics for intelligent electronic devices, routers, switches, and other IP enabled devices.
Our dynamic performance comparison tools allow any combination of devices or performance metrics to be analyzed over time, and our Compliance Enforcement Module provides real-time visualization and alerts on actions and behaviors deemed critical under Regulatory Compliance mandates including those from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
Grid Intrusion Management (GRIM)
Infrax’s Grid Intrusion Management (GRiM) is an intelligent network communication solution capable of establishing a private, closed and secure virtual network over the Internet and data encryption. The endpoints of this network are GRiM enabled devices which provide the best-of-breed cyber security gateways from the meter to the utility’s operating center for a total secure data transmission and grid protection.
Smart Metering
Infrax’s AMI provides a secure AMI transport layer/communications network necessary to transport the data generated by Smart Meters to the Energy Control Center. This will allow Utilities the ability to monitor power usage, remotely disconnect and reconnect power. This will save them significant time and money over the traditional manual disconnect/connect method currently in place.
Distribution Automation
Distribution
The evolution of the Smart Grid will forever change the process of power distribution and it is in this section of the grid that the changes will be most noticeable. Intelligence and advanced communications functionality will need to be incorporated in switchgear, transformers, reactive power compensation solutions, and SCADA/DMS (Distribution Management System) to improve the operational efficiency of medium- and low-voltage power networks.
As power generation becomes more distributed, the distribution grid will need to become more responsive to fluctuations in power quality and changes in consumer demand. Most importantly, all of the solutions implemented must be secure to face the challenges presented by Cyber-Terrorism.
Infrax’s suite of software and hardware solutions will initially be focused on securely meeting the evolving requirements of distribution networks. Grid Intrusion Management (GRIM) will be incorporated into all of our software and hardware products. Our Enforcer automated meter disconnect product will allow utilities to throttle or disconnect power to a consumer from a secure, remote location without putting field personnel in harms way.
Distribution Automation Services
The management of the complex automation systems will rely on real-time and secure communications, coupled with highly adaptive control systems. Real-time information will be required by utilities and their customers from across the network relating to grid performance, power flow and consumer demand. Infrax’s ADR (Advanced Demand Response) product will allow intelligent automated devices to react to imbalances in the system and also improve asset management by enabling improved predictive maintenance programs and faster emergency response times.
Utility operations will be greatly enhanced by the deployment of our enterprise-wide information systems and customer response management tools. Infrax’s product suite will improve utility operations by enabling substation and feeder automation, to securely and intelligently distribute or inhibit power flow based on peak demand.
Home Area Networks
Once Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is in place, it will become easier to link the “smart” home devices to smart meters either directly or indirectly from within a home. Although no standards have been finalized for Home Area Networking, there are a variety of technologies such as ZigBee, Home Plug, Z-Wave etc at play. GE and Whirlpool have made announcements incorporating ZigBee into their smart appliances.
The secure communications devices under development by Infrax will initially include ZigBee capability, but will have the ability to add other technologies as they mature or become commonplace.

AMI
One important function of our Secure Intelligent Energy Platform (SIEP), as a turnkey solution, is to provide hardware devices, such as Secured Intelligent Endpoint Devices (SIED) with embedded Secured Network Interface Card (SNIC), for the Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) Substation. These SIEDs include Smart Meters (AMR, AMI), Remote Connect-Disconnect, Sensors, Communication Aggregators, and Hubs.
Smart Meters – AMR, AMI
Meter such as AMR (Advanced Meter Reading) which is the technology of automatically collecting consumption, diagnostic, and status data from electric metering devices and transferring that data to a central database for billing, troubleshooting, and analyzing. This advance mainly saves utility providers the expense of periodic trips to each physical location to read a meter. Another advantage is billing can be based on near real time consumption rather than on estimates based on previous or predicted consumption. This timely information coupled with analysis, can help both utility providers and customers better control the use and production of electric energy, gas usage, or water consumption.
AMI "raises the bar" with regard to traditional Automatic meter reading (AMR) in that it enables two-way communications with the meter. The network between the measurement devices and business systems allows collection and distribution of information to customers, suppliers, utility companies and service providers. By providing information to customers, the system assists a change in energy usage from their normal consumption patterns, either in response to changes in price or as incentives designed to encourage lower energy usage use at times of peak-demand periods or higher wholesale prices or during periods of low operational systems reliability.
Smart grid without a Smart Meter would not be possible. We consider the Smart Meters and the infrastructure around it which includes hardware, software, communications, customer associated systems and meter data management (MDM) software an essential part toward the evolution of the Utility industry. Through our “Secured Network Interface Card (SNIC)” imbedded in all SIEDs including Smart Meters and sensors, and our security based software and management tools, we are able to create an impenetrable barrier against cyber-attacks.
